The library is the oldest public institution of such kind from the republic. In October 2019 it celebrated 130 years of continuous activity. Originally, it was founded to provide the museum, according to the destination, with scientific information, especially news from agriculture and zoology. Over the years, the library diversified its list with publications from different fields of natural sciences, museography, history and ethnography of the country, with various albums, encyclopedias and dictionaries. So currently, the library holds 41,677 units of books, magazines, newspapers. Many of them come from donations made by some members of the Bessarabian Society of Naturalists, by museum collaborators, by scientists from scientific institutions and by teachers. The collection of rare books has a special historical and bibliographical value.
